Snake Pass.

Update 1 / 24 June 2017 : Just wanted to make you aware that since my review Sumo-Digital issued 2 patches. One (Patch 1.1) resolved the HD rumble issues and a few fix, the second (Patch 1.2) that was just released a few days back introduced a new time trials mode/Online scoreboard.

Unfortunately, blurry picture undocked mode feeling still remains, frame-rate went a little worse (not sure why) and they reintroduced the HD rumble issue that was fixed on the 1.1 version.

P.S: Sumo-Digital, if you read this, try your best to improve a few things of the Switch Version

  • Blurry Feeling in Undocked Mode
  • Custom Snake
  • Fix HD Rumble like you did on Patch 1.1
  • Improve Frame-Rate
  • Add a level editor ?
  • Add a few extra levels
  • Fix Water Plane Clip (while moving the camera, near plane, need fix refraction level on your material and adjust camera clipping plane
  • Add a speed mode snake ? (when you catch a certain

Yes still playing the game. Yes I do like it !

Since this morning I had the possibility to try and play Snake Pass on Nintendo Switch, a game made by Sumo-Digital. But before I start to talk about this game, let me tell you that I won’t write 100 pages to definite whether a game is good or not (no matter which game I try).

So let’s try to make it simple ? I hope

Mechanics : Is really good but what did you expect from a Snake anyway ? It moves like a Snake, push off from any surface like a Snake, sneaking around like snake. Basically it pass the Snake test, so definitely a Snake Pass.

Gameplay : Despite being simple, it is addictive. Animations are great (feels like a real snake), the way how this Snake looks at the colourful world around him is funny. Sometimes he looks stupid but hey, that makes this Snake character Noodle cute ? Did I say cute, let’s not forget his buddy Doodle. Yes, their names are Noodle and Doodle, don’t ask me why.

Anyway, Doodle acts like a sidekick, he can help Noodle in the same manner as we use Chopsticks to eat Noodles. Doodle can carry the tail of Noodle to help Noodle access to different spots. Carry on, Carry on, but most of the time Doodle gives you advises and directives.

You have 15 Levels, from what I heard, around +10 hours to finish them all (100% complete). Each Level contain Obstacles/Puzzles, each one is more difficult. It also takes time to learn to control Noodle as everything on him move like crazy but after a while you should master the Snake move.

Graphics : The big question, is the graphics of the game good? Well, it depends on what you expect from a game like that. Snake Pass has the right graphics, didn’t expect more from a game like this one, colourful and clean. Snake Pass uses Unreal Engine 4 on Nintendo Switch, same as the PS4/XBOXONE/PC version. Resolution is of course lower on the Switch version that I think could have been better adjusted if they had more time, I guess. Engine scalability -material quality level can lead to a certain improvement and also trigger filtering to nearest could help to avoid the blurry look.

In a way, it looks like the game is running in 480p scaled to 720p on the Nintendo Switch, while it is really running in 720p, caused by several settings that needs to be adjusted on the Unreal Engine 4, probably didn’t cover them yet for the Nintendo Switch version.

For sure, it is fully acceptable, despite some texture clipping and the issues below.

Music : Can’t say anything, calm, pleasant and agreeable.

I basically say what I wanted to say about Snake Pass. For me it is a great game, not the best but one of those games that keep you relaxed and a game that you can have an enjoyable moment. Exactly what a game should offer you. Also it is not expensive and fully accessible to anyone. Target age is everybody,

What is missing on Snake Pass ? Level editor, multiplayer mode (Snake Pass Race with 2 players mode exploiting the joy-con shared controller or some sort), a pimp my snake but I’m pretty sure that the Sumo-Digital is preparing a lot of surprises for this game. Remember they didn’t have that much time to make the game on for Nintendo Switch on time.

Oh yes, forgot to say. The most annoying thing of this game is the hd rumble, can’t be adjusted (only turn off using Nintendo Switch Joy-Con Settings) and can be really disturbing sometimes (mainly loud). Fix this haha. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Conclusion for me ? (Everything is subjective, as I always say)
